La nostra storia //Our story:

Ci siamo conosciuti e a Washington, DC nell’autunno 2009. Cercavo una stanza in affitto durante i mesi per i mesi in cui sarei dovuta rimanere a Washington per il suo dottorato al National Institutes of Health, e caso fu che finii per essere la coinquilina di James! (Galeotta fu questa email). Ricordo che James mi apri’ il portone del palazzo e mi ha aiuto’ a portare in casa le mie valigie. Prima di arrivare di sopra io mi ero gia’ innamorata del suo sorriso.

We met by complete chance in Washington, DC in 2009: Silvia was looking for a temporary sublet while carrying out some research for her PhD at NIH, and the one she found happened to be in James’ apartment! (Here‘s the original email that triggered everything.) During those first few weeks together, we weathered an infestation of bed bugs, celebrated Silvia’s first Thanksgiving with James’ grandparents in Florida, and laughed together over Calvin & Hobbes comics.

Ci abbiamo messo un po’ per diventare una vera e propria coppia, quasi due anni! Nel frattempo ci sono state vari traslochi: da Washington DC a Milano a Londra (settembre 2010) a San Francisco (settembre 2011) per Silvia; e da Washington DC a Monterey (agosto 2011) dopo un viaggio intorno al globo di quattro mesi per James. Dal settembre 2012 siamo entrambi nello stesso luogo: Londra per noi ora e’ casa.

We knew there was something special between us, but it took 2 years and several different moves (Silvia from DC to Milan to London to San Francisco; James from DC to Monterey following a 4-month around-the-world trip) before we officially became a couple in Maine in August 2011. We moved into a studio in London’s Camden Town neighborhood in September 2012, and to a “proper flat” in Stockwell a year later.

… we are obsessed with owls!// siamo fissati con i gufetti!

In effetti tutti coloro che sono stati a casa nostra avranno potuto notare che abbiamo gufi gufini e gufetti sparsi un po’ ovunque nell’appartmento, a cominciare dai piccoli gufi porta-occhiali che potete vedere nella foto qui sopra.

Yes indeed you may notice when you come visit that we have owls everywhere around the flat, starting from the funny-looking glasses-holders portrayed in the header of this website. 

L’origine di questa nostra “fissazione” e’ che siamo entrambi piuttosto ‘goofy’ (in italiano, anzi romagnolo, potremmo tradurre come ‘sasi’), la cui pronuncia ricorda molto la parola italiana  ‘gufi’ ovvero ‘owls’! Da questa assonanza e’ nato il nostro soprannome ‘gufini’ che ci ha portato a fare numerosi acquisti gufosi!

The reason is that we are both kind of ‘goofy’ and at some point we started referring to each other as goofball’. In Italian though, ‘goofy’ sounds very much like ‘gufo’ which means ‘owl’, and we’ve since adopted “goofino/goofina” as our nickname for each other, and the owl as one of our symbols.
